Letter from W.N. Searancke, to Donald McLean Esq. dated 11th. March 1857. Waiuku 11th. March 1857. Dear Sir, On account of the jealousy and differences of opinion among the natives, I have not, as yet, succeeded in getting them to accompany me and point out the boundaries of the different Blocks. Katipa and Aihepene both consent to my proposal to make one large square Block of land, from the South head of the Manukau (Potatau's land excepted), Southward to Matakawau. This would include all the land on which money has been paid; and also a large piece on which, as yet, there has been advances. I have made a complete survey of the whole of the outer boundaries to Manukau and the Coast; and am now waiting the arrival of some natives, whose consent is, I think, necessary, before I complete the survey. At the present time, it will not be advisable for you to come this way; as I have succeeded in getting a very good understanding with Te Katipa, Aihepene, and the Ngatitiata tribe generally. It is, as far as I can see, a most excellent Block of land; abundance of timber sprinkled about it in different parts; and the soil, (with the exception of a strip of about a mile and a half wide on the Manukau) very rich. If I succeed in getting the whole Block, as I expect, there will be about 20,000 acres. As soon as I have marked and surveyed the boundaries in the Interior, I shall take an opportunity of seeing you in Auckland, (in about a fortnight or three weeks.) I am, dear Sir, Yours obliged, (Signed) Will N. Searancke. P.S. You will pardon my ignorance if I have made a mistake in writing privately instead of officially. To:- D. Maclean Esq. Chief Commissioner Auckland.
