Auckland 30 December /71 Dear Mr. McLean The Luna goes off in a hurry and I send a line to say that things remain quiet and peaceable. With reference to the objections raised by the King people through "Pineaha" (papers concerning wh. have already been forwarded) it has been ascertained, that Te Ngakau the same man who visited Te Hira about two years ago is said to be the Bearer of the Message and came to Piako for that purpose, but modified in this way, that the matter of the Telegraph should stand over until the March meeting, wh. the Natives generally seem to have fixed to take place at "Ngaruawahia" as the most convenient point for the Governor yourself and the friendly Natives of distant parts. While referring to Pineaha I would respectfully urge that the £50 be paid to him but in Two different Instalments of £25 - He has been recently on a visit to Auckland and is now a man of some note amongst the Hauhau party. I saw Eru Patuone the other day and sent him your welcome increase to his Pension - Wishing you the compliments of the Season and many New Years I remain Faithfully yours H.T.Kemp
