My dear Sir George, I enclose the copy of the letter I addressed to General Cameron. I have written to Douglas asking him to state if any circumstances ever came under his notice while commanding here that could justify the accusation made by General Cameron. The reply is not yet received, I believe from the date of General Cameron's letter that Col. Trevor must have been the General's correspondent. I am satisfied Douglas was not in any way concerned in it and Whitmore tells me that he urged upon the General the necessity for reinforcing this place. Since the arrival of the 70th. at this place the Hau Haus have very much moderated in their tone. Paora Toki one of their leaders who was preparing to erect a large Hau hau flag staff has been ordered by the chiefs not to do so and he has since left for Maunga haruru. There is no late news from the East Cape, the stranding of the St. Kilda has prevented communication for the last week or two. I remain My dear Sir George, Yours faithfully, Donald McLean. I should be glad to get the order submitted to you for sending troops to the Wairoa and Ngaruroro. D.McL. Oct. 7, 1865.
