Letter from H. Halse to Donald McLean Esq. dated 29th. December 1855. New Plymouth 29th. December 1855. My dear Sir, A portion of the 65th. left in the Brig "Ocean" for Auckland on Tuesday last. On the following day Ta Kerei of Mokau arrived here, in the expectation of seeing you. I enclose a letter to you from him. Our Native question remains quiet, and there is no appearance of a fresh outbreak. At the same time, until the question is finally settled, acts of violence may take place, and so cause many variations upon which it would be idle to speculate. I am informed verbally that the office of Inspector of Police is abolished, and that the Superintendent will perform the duties of that Officer. How long he will find it convenient to do so with regard to the responsible duties of his own office, I am not able to say. Dunn is to be appointed Sergeant at a salary of £120, and I trust he will do credit to my recommendation. The only point I am doubtful upon is as to whether he will work on vordial terms with the native police. faithfully yours (Signed) H. Halse. P.S. We heard of your trip to Whanganui.
