Dr. Pollen on behalf of the Provincial Government has this morning had an interview with the Colonial Secretary and Treasurer and with the Native Secretary on the subject of the maximum price to be offered for the Coromandel Gold Field --- on which occasion it has been determined by the members of the General Government with Dr. Pollen's concurrence to recommend that the Native Secretary be authorised to exceed the price of from 1/6 to 2/s per acre mentioned in the Colonial Treasurers minute of this date on the Native Secretarys Memorandum respecting the proposed purchase, and 3/- per acre (three shillings) has been assented to by all parties as the extreme limit of price. The great political object of obviating a collision of the races in the event of the discovery of a profitable goldfield is considered to justify the Government in going to this length. It is however earnestly hoped that the native demands may not reach so extortionate a height. C. W. Richmond Auckland 9th May 1857
