Moorlands. 2nd. July 1873. Dear McLean, Your note dated 27th. June has only just reached me by todays post from Napier, tho I was there yesterday. With respect to Captain Curling I promised Major Wood who ginds Roto-iti too cold for him that I would recommend his removal to Blenheim (Wairau). If you approve there would be a vacancy at Roto-iti but it is as you know very isolated. The school at Tuparoa is just finished and there is therefore an opening there - but it is also very much cut off from Europeans. I fancy there are one if not two schools built by this time under Mr. Woons auspices on the Wanganui River. You approved generally the appointment of a Mr. McNeale to a school who went to Wanganui, and I recommended him for Matatera Wangaehu but received an answer that you had appointed a Mr. Lewis to that school O so I do not know whether Mr. McNeale has yet been appointed to either of the Wanganui schools. Those are the only Schools which offer immediately but if you authorise those asked for by White, Von Sturmer, and Brabant there will be vacancies when they are built. I saw St. Josephs yesterday. Pakowhai today and will see Anahu tomorrow or next day. Yours very truly, A.H. Russell.
