"Luna" Nov. 5th 1870 My Dear Mr McLean As I have no time to write officially, I drop you a few lines in acknowledgment of letter by the "Luna". I will commence the road work indicated in the instructions immediately, I am very glad indeed that it has been decided to commence this work, in some cases I shall require the assistance of a surveyor and will write officially to that effect. The chiefs will be pleased with the letters complimenting them for their feat in the Urewera question. During the past few days I have been in communication with Nepia Tokitahi, he sent a Whakatohea called Rawiri Makanu in to ask about conditions, I replied that he must trust to the demands of the Govt. I expect that he will be in today or tomorrow, he has not seen Te Kooti since the fight at Waireka and has been at Manutai for several months, it appears that there is a considerable quantity of potatoes there still. I have not heard anything of Te Kooti for some time, I think it not unlikely that he has gone to Te Papuni, as he intended to shift his uarters. Te Hura has been writing to his friends in these parts, he says "te iwi e a ki uta ki te ora ka whano te tata "te tai a Ruaeo", this is a "Whakatauki mate" his relatives here are very angry with him about it. The surrendered folks are getting on very steadily. I trust that when you visit this District again that you will let me know in time, so that I may have Te Wheruami, Tamaikoutu and others ready to meet you. I am My dear Mr McLean Yours very truly W.G. Mair.
