Warenga a Hika July 24th. 1865 My dear Sir, You will hear from other correspondents of gross defection of Ngatimaru and Rongowhakaata generally. W. Kingi, Tamati Hapumania and Anaru Matete with a large number of others have openly joined the Hauhaus. Matenga Tamaroria continues staunch as far as I can see, and so does Tamihana, Ruatapu, and Rutene. I begin to hope that Ihuiri sees that it is of no use to tamper with Hauhaus and Kupapas, though from past circumstances I cannot repose much confidence in his professions. There was an exclusive Kawanatanga meeting held at Waikato last week, which for all its exclusiveness was attended by some very doubtful characters. It was decided at this meeting that the Government party should unite to put up a pa at Turanganui for defensive purposes, if it should be needed. I hope this will end in the strengthening of the pa at the flagstaff, and so healing the breeseches between the parties who are opposed to each other, though professedly on the same side. Putanga Ihuiti have all declared themselves for the Government, and profess to be ready to drill. etc., but it seems to me that this may be a device to get a supply of arms and ammunition. The Hauhaus do not seem inclined to molest us yet, and as long as they keep quiet it does not seem necessary to give the other side arms, especially when one can hardly tell who is really on our side. Hoping to see you before long. I remain Yours truly (Signed) W.L. Williams.
