Ohineuha Jany. 2nd. 1857? My dear McLean, We of Porangahau Block have heard of your arrival at Ahuriri with very great pleasure and I need hardly say we trust you will do something for us during this visit. Our position is becoming an extremely unpleasant one. Circumstances force us to keep doing something in the way of improvements, altho' it is rather hazardous work for the other hand large rents are accumulating, due to the Natives on the purchase of the lands. This surely will add an additional inducement to them to take the payment. There is still I understand from the Natives some hitch about Reserves, in other respects they consider the purchase as completed. Could you but manage to get down this far you might at once settle the whole question, besides being able to make other arrangements about the Reserves which wd. be beneficial to all parties. I do not say this lightly for I feel convinced if you wd. but come here you wd. find no difficulty in completing the purchase satisfactorily. The Natives here are very quiet and are behaving extremely well to the Settlers, hoping you will let us see you during this visit, believe me always, Very truly yours, J. D. Ormond
