Westoe, 2 June 73 My Dear McLean, I enclose you another long epistle from McDonald. I have not answered it, but there does seem some reason in the request he makes on behalf of the Natives, to have the preliminary steps taken before the Act is passed, so that there may be no delay in issuing the Grants. You will see towards the end he has saved me the trouble of writing more fully, by suggesting what I should write and which I pass on accordingly. The matter is undoubtedly one which should be settled as soon as possible and my feeling is that the parties concerned should be allowed to have it settled according to their own fancy. The total amount of reserves and their boundaries being now decided, it matters very little how they are subdivided, or under what or any limitations. The main thing is for the Govt. to get rid of it, and let them fight it out among themselves for the future. I think such settlement as McD. proposes probably will be final and satisfactory, in practice to all. I have written Vogel a few lines on Worgan's and Rogan's affairs, which I should like you to see. Excusing bad writing. I am seriously thinking of going to a Night school to improve my penmanship. Yours faithfully, Wm. Fox. Mr. Brewer of Marton is writing to you about some Militia promotion or other honours. All I can say of him is that I believe him to be a very decent fellow, and one who might be useful in Govt. Employment. His version of his own treatment by Whitmore and his services I beleive quite true. He shewed me his letter and asked me to mention to you my knowledge of him.
