Friday 24 Dec./58. My dear Sir, The enclosed was handed to me after the natives cases were disposed of, and time will not permit me to make a translation of it. The funeral of Hone took place on Tuesday last but owing to the uncertainty which attended it, but few settlers were present. I am doing all in my power for the benefit of his only child, a girl of about 8 years of age, but having been told that the widow is near her confinement I have thought it better to delay further action for the present. The summons against W.K. did not come to a hearing and would have been better if never issued. All is quiet here. The Judge having sentenced the prisoners Lucas and Jones to 15 years penal servitude, return to Auckland by the steamer and I should imagine will not be required very frequently. Faithfully yours, H. Halse. P.S. I send two accounts for Freight of Nga Pure last October for approval and only now mention them in accordance with your wishes. H.H.
