Poverty Bay 19 May 1868 My dear Mr. McLean I send you a letter which I ought to have given to you in Napier but did not find it till I arrived here it having got inside a newspaper in my pocket I am much to blame for not remembering it but trust it is not one of great consequence. We had a capital trip up only twenty four hours. The Maoris are endeavouring to get some money out of Read for the run of his cattle and the rent of the standing room of the houses he has built at Turanganui but without success. Read knows the law cannot touch him so will not pay it is unfortunate he and other owners of stock cannot be made to pay something as these things tend much to make the natives dissatisfied with us as a fair remuneration is nothing more than what is due to them. There is nothing else new to tell you Believe me Yours very truly Reginald Newton Biggs
