Wairoa Expedition. 1869 :- Colonel Lambert's dispatch reached me Friday 9.p.m 27th. March. Night advance on Tukurangi. Friday 9 - Divided force in consequence of Dispatches recd. and because of extreme anxiety of the Natives concerning their settlements. Told off Hapimana's division to attack Te Kiwi. Saturday 10 - Piest division reached Clyde by 10 a.m. - 2nd. by 4 p.m. Marched out 1st. division. to Mohaka by 10 p.m. by Saturday night. (With about 100 to 120 men) occupied heights overlooking Mohaka Pas by daylight on Sunday 11 - Sunday morning - wrote for support to C.O. Wairoa and moved to relieve Jerusalem Pa - engaged ''Te Kooti'' and threw sufficient men into Pa to hold it - driven out of position by force of numbers and failing ammunition. 2nd. division came to our relief meeting us at Waihua about 2 p.m. having been delayed by officers in Wairoa. Withdrew force into Clyde by sundown - feeling secure that Pa would hold out and expecting Te Kooti to follow up ourforce to Wairoa. Of my force I lost at ''Te Kiwi'' - 2 killed 1 wounded, one of the killed being Rev. Tamehana's elder brother. Lost at Mohaka - 3 killed Enemy slain at Te Kiwi - 'Hori te Rangi' Chief of 'NgatimateWai' and 6 others Many wounded also and settlement destroyed.
