The Governor desires to have a settlement of existing differences with the Waikato. For many years the Waikato and the Europeans have lived in peace. Of late the Waikato have turned their backs upon the Europeans ignored the sovereignty of the Queen, left their own country to attack her troops, visited other tribes with whom they have no connection to resist the sale of land to the European. They plundered and destroyed property for which and other injuries committed by them no restitution has been made and they have taken up arms to resist the authority of the Queen of England who has always regarded them as objects of her special favour and care. This state of things cannot last. The governor therefore calls upon the Chiefs and people of Ngatihaoa Waikato Ngatimaniapoto and other tribes associated with them to consider the folly of pursuing a course so fatal to their own present and future welfare and desires them to submit to the Queen's sovereignty and law and make full amends for the unprovoked unjuries they have inflicted. The governor desires to be informed at an early period of the intentions of the Waikato Chiefs with reference to a settlement of existing difference and hopes they will not be deterred from shame or other feelings from coming forward in a frank and open manner to acknowledge their error and to satisfy the Governor of their sincere desire to atone for the past and conduct themselves in future as good and faithful subjects of the Queen.
