Taheke. Feb. 17th. 1870. Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Memo, of the 16th. inst. and to inform you that I asked the principal men of Nga-t-pikiao, at this place, if they intended to start for the front in accordance with your wishes, and they replied that they could not egt the tribe to move. Therefore I will march for Maketu to-morrow morning. I hear that the Ohinemutu natives (Ngati-Whaka-rewa) have determined to remain stationary also.
