Native Record. Memo. 15th. May 1856. Mr. Preece states that there is an immense deal of crime at Whakatane and Coromandel, Harbour of Whakatane and Coromandel Harbour. A Resident Magistrate required to suppress those evils at both places. Mr. Smith at the former place, where he could ride and visit the coast stations, would be the most eligible. A respectable settler to be a J.P. at Coromandel Harbour. To have vessel to clear out as well as in to the Customs, so that the Government could prevent smuggling arms and spirits. A bad feeling generally among the tribes, requiring most judicious management on the part of the Government. Each native vessel to be searched also. Whalers liable to same restrictive laws as aboriginal natives; "Rover's bride" Capt. one of that class. Americans doing mischief among the natives through the country generally, teaching natives to make powder; the gum from Warakeki better than charcoal. One manufactory at the Bay; two at Waiheke; one Waiheke; one Waikato. An embargo on trade of Manaia natives.
