Stafford edoubt Wairoa 11th. January 1869. Sir, I have the honor to state that the natives, - 56 in number, - applied to me Saturday night last, for food, - they being in want. On speaking to Mr. Preece, he referred me to your letter dated 17th. November, 1868, in which you leave it to the diseretion of the Officer in Command, to give a week's rations. I accordingly gave a week's rations (56 in number), of flour, (there was no sugar), with which they appeared satisfied. This morning the Arawas started to their homes. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) A.D. Corfield Capt. Commanding. To:- His Honor, D. McLean. N.B. This authority should not be acted upon again without special reference. (Signed) D. McL.
