Te Wairoa, Kaipara 31st March 1867 My dear Mr McLean, You will wonder that I have not given you a scratch of my pen for so long a time. Nevertheless you have not been absent from my mind. I have been in trouble for a long time about my Kaipara land, but thank goodness, although I have not yet got the Grant, all will end well, and I think I can yet work out of the 'Telegraph', without any thanks to old Col. Chaos, alias Russell. He is no friend of yours either. I shall not attempt to write a long story to you now but I begin to see my way clear in about 6 weeks to ask for leave of absence to go and see you if you think you will be at Napier about that period. Don't be angry because I did not send . I will explain all that when I see you. You will be surprised when I tell you that my sister is going to have a . I only hope she will recover safely - I have been stopping with C. Walters for 2 days. He is louder than of old and talks if possible 10 times faster. Let me know by one line if I can find you at Napier in two months. Ever yours Very truly J. Rogan Donald McLean Esq. Napier I anticipate a long Korero from you about the great and successful battle which was organized by you against the Hauhaus in your province. J. R.
