Confidential. Napier, 20th March, 61. My dear MacLean, The effect of the Supt's action on the Native L.P. ordinance is, that persons have since the failure (as we call the law business here) leased lands from the Maories. I could name myself four who have done so, and if you do not look out you stand a good chance of loosing the plain. I have heard some grumbling amongst the Natives with regard to payment of rent (a thing of course you would not do, as it is all owing to accident that the sheep overstep the boundary) but why not fare as well as anyone who likes, your run is not equal to feeding any large number of sheep, but if it gets help all will be right. I have just returned from Maraikakaho. My wife is there experiencing every kindness from your sister and Mrs. MacLean. Old Strong is expected by the next steamer - My dear McLean, take with regard to my marriage settlement as a Trustee without my knowledge. obliged to ask you to do this but my me to do so. Truly and sincerely, H. Fitzgerald. The Ship Nissel has had fair winds since she left this and is expected back in about a week. It is now blowing from the Southwest.
