Rangitikei 28th Jan. 1871 My Dear McLean I am here for a few days on my way to Welln. In where I hope to be some time next week. Kemp had left the district before I got here, but if what I hear be true he has been far exceeding instuctions and "making ducks and drakes" of the land. For instance I am told that opposite my place where you told the natives they would have all below the Cliff, and what Carkeek estimated at 2000 acres and you thought quite enough, he has given them land far back amounting to In another case where they wanted 10 acres to cover burial grounds he promised 1000 - and altogether the amt. beyond the 12000 promised by you is 8000, making 20000 in all, besides which the friendlies are so encouraged by his easiness that they are going in for still more. If this is true or anything like true, it will not do, and we shall have to disclaim what he has done and restrict the natives to what you specifically promised. I have not however got authentic information, so only write in haste to put you on your guard against confering what Kemp has done. Yours faithfully Wm. Fox
