Waingaroa Nov. 19th. 1860. My dear Sir, With this you will receive a letter from W. Naylor which has lately arrived from Aotea. The request contained in that letter for the Makaka people to join the inland tribes in their mad freak against Auckland, was made before the news arrived of the death of Wetini ma. I rather imagine that that intelligence will have the effect of philosophizing them a little with regard to Auckland. Naylor proposes leaving home today on a visit to Tamihana to reason with them on the folly of their project to the north and to induce them, if possible, to abandon their scheme. To the letter received from Aotea you will find appended a few lines from Williams. As two interpretations might be given to the words ''Ko ia ano he utu'', and as W. says lower down ''e kore e kiti maku ano e korero ki a koe''. I may just observe that W. has said to me that as the Waikato chiefs have fallen in defending King's obstinacy the Waikatos should seek payment of him and not leave it in the hands of the Government to avenge the death of their friends. W. sometimes needs a little of my counsel to guide his thoughts and reasonings. I have told him that it is not my opinion that the government will wakaae to any proposal of that sort, but I have not told him why I think so. In addition to other reasons it would of course be a dangerous experiment to allow the Waikatos to ally themselves with our troops when it was those troops who shot their friends. They would no doubt watch for an opportunity to retaliate upon our troops. But you don't need my suggestions on this point. I have understood from our people here that the movements of the Ngatipaoa people are very uncertain - that is as to the route by which they dream of getting to Auckland. It will therefore be well to keep a good look out on the waters as well as the road by Papakura which has been mentioned a probable line for them to take. I am not at all of opinion that any steps will be taken northward. Yours truly, J. Wallis.
