Kawhia Oct. 19th. 1867. Sir, On the 8th. of Sep. last, I addressed a letter to the Waste lands Office, requesting to be informed if I might purchase from the Natives a small piece of Land consisting of about 7 acres and which the owners are will ing to sell, and which would afterwards be transferred to me by the Government. I have just received an answer from the commissioner Mr. O Rafferty, in which he acquaint me that the Government do not allow private individuals to purchase land from the Aborigines of New Zealand, and further that the affair must be referred to the General Government for decision. I have now therefore the honour of addressing you as the Chief Commissioner for the purchase of Native Lands, to request that my application for the above mentioned piece of ground may be laid before the Government so that if no objections should occur, measures may betaken by the proper authorities for the survey and purchase of the same on my behalf I am in the occupancy of the Maori Mill at Rangitaiki, and have for the past 2½years been working it for the Natives and Europeans of this side of the Harbour But my present residence is at an inconvenient distance from the mill, and I wish if possible to reside nearer. The spot of land selected will be convenient for all parties concerned. It is called Koutukowai situated round the bluff to the seaward of Takatahi and ajoining the lands where Werimu Hoeta the Chief owner resides. Hoping that this application will meet with the approval of the Government and requesting as early a reply as may be convenient. I have the honor to be Sir, Your obedient Servant, W.W. Dixon. D. McLean Esq Chief. Native Commissioner Auckland.
