21 January 1860 Greytown. My dear McLean, I find from the immense amount of business on hand and the uncertain return of the Chief Commr. that it is utterly out of the question my paying you a visit at the Ahuriri, I shall therefore be obliged if you would ship my Horse by White Swan on her return trip to Wellington the 10th. of next month that is should this arrive in time if not by the following trip on or about the 24th. please see the mate of the Steamer and make arrangements for taking care of the Horse on the passage, and I will gladly pay him for his trouble £1 or any sum you think is sufficient send him next trip if possible as I am hard up for a Horse. Brathwaite speaks very highly of the Black Mare and told me that he would willingly give £40 for her so that I think you have made a good bargain. I think we shall succeed in getting up Races at the Hutt this year subscriptions having reached £150 in a few days. Let me know if my horse would stand any chance at the hurdle race as there is no good Horse here. I regret much that I shall not be able to pay you a visit but wait in hoped that some other time I shall have it in my power. Ever yours most truly, Will N. Searancke. D. McLean Esq.,
