Auckland 26th Oct 1846 Dear McLean, The debt due by you to the estate of the late Mr. Ewen McLennan Amt. £15-5-0 I had to pay the same to the Estate on account of my having contracted the debt with you after Mr. McLennan's death. You must be aware (being endeavouring to carry on bussiness here on rather an extensive scale on my own account) that it is very inconvenient for me to have to pay money on any other acc. but that of my bussiness, particularly so as my capital is very limited. Had you been in a position not to be able to pay, I would in that case excuse you and would not feel inclined to trouble you but from the fact that you are in a position I don't see any reason why you should not pay. I have commenced business on my own acc. in Nov. 1845 and have done very fair. I have been in Sydney twice since buying goods, I am only back three months ago and I intend leaving again by the Mannin to leave in four days. I have had a letter from Dr. Martin a few weeks ago, dated the 20th. May. He was then in London and quite undecided what to do but I believe their is but little chance of his coming back to New Zealand for some time he was then quite well in health. He desires to be remembered to you so I beg to take this opportunity. Mr. Brown and family is coming back and may be expected here daily. I have no news of any interest to communicate. The natives have allwise been very quiet here towards the European settlers and are likely to continue. Captain Gray is going ahead making laws regardless of any opposition. He is not very popular here and it is doubtful if he will be allwise, even as popular as he is now. Some of his laws will have to be very obnoxious and perhaps will not work as well as he may now think. However time will tell what he is; if he turns out to be good we will regard him for the good he may have done. Yours truly, Rodk. McKenzie P.S. £14 to pay for a boy you may have to amuse yourself with is no joke.
