23rd March 1865 My dear Sir Since writing my last, I am informed by Hamana Taiepa that the Hau party has arrived at Turanga with Mr. Grace and Mr. Volkners Head that Hirini demanded the head also Mr. Grace but was told by the Hau Haus that the head had said it was to be taken to Taranaki to be buried, and Mr. Grace was also to be taken there but whether to be killed or not seems doubtful - The Turanga Natives have given the Hau Haus a very cool reception being much disgusted with the murder and they (the murderers) together with the Party that left this for Turanga are not to be allowed to return this way, and the few Hau Haus who are at the Wakakihi lake are to be sent about their business. I am inclined to believe Hamanas statement but perhaps as you know the man better than I do you will be able to form some idea of the truth of his statements. In haste Your obt. svt. S. Deighton.
