Napier, 4 Augt., 1865. My dear Sir, I feel exceedingly obliged for the nice present of apples you sent me they have been most acceptable/ I regret to hear of the continued defection of the Turanga Natives, at present I am getting all the support I can for Morgan and trust the immediate aid he has recd. will operate favorably on the Hau haus of Turanga. That villain Patara found Waiapu too hot for him, and he is now among the Opotiki people, his pretence is that he has gone for more followers but I doubt very much if such is his real intention. The friendly Natives of Waiapu, Hick's Bay, Tuparoa and te Mawe are now well armed, I expect they will be firm in their adherence, knowing so much of them as you do I should like to have a hint from you respecting them. I Remain, Yours very truly, (Sigd.) Donald McLean. Capt. Reed
