Auckland April 6th, 1861 My dear Sir, I have posted to your address a copy of today's summary, which contains a very favorable review of our ''Manuhiri''. I am glad it is so well received, and no labour shall be wanting on my part to render it as efficient as possible. We opened the tenders for printing yesterday. Wilson's was considerably below Mr.Moore's (the only other tender). The issue for the 1st April has been delayed pending the acceptance of tender. We shall now go to work and have it out in a day or two. I won't fail to send you a good parcel of them. There is one little matter, however, that I wish to mention. Mr. Smith demands my submitting the manuscript of my leaders to for revision. I have reason to believe that nothing would give him greater delight than to cut my work to pieces and cripple my usefulness. I admit that it is essential that the Government should have a check on what I write, but surely the approval of the Nat.Minister, during your absence, is sufficient without my being exposed to Mr.Smith's petty spirit of spleen. If, however, it is to be so, then I must submit; but of this I am sure, , for while I shall still continue my efforts for its success I shall be subject to continual annoyance and interference. Mr. Smith looks on the publication of the news paper with a very unfavorable eye, as it was startedin opposition to his wishes; indeed he still talks of perpertuating the Messenger as official organ of the Government. I trust, Sir, you will give the subject a little consideration and let me know by letter what my position in the matter is, and whether I am to be under the entire control of Mr.S. I beg to remain, My dear sir, Faithfully yours, Walter Buller D. McLean Esq.
