Jany. 63 Sir, It is proposed to form a society in this Province to be designated, if thought desirable, the Hawkes Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society with the object of bringing country residents together on certain occasions, and of founding an annual Exhibition of Stock produce and implements belonging to bona fide settlers in the Province; with perhaps certain classes for Exhibitors from the Sister Provinces - The idea is not a new one in Hawkes Bay and it was contemplated to form a society of this kind some years ago - The Province has since that period advanced considerably, and is now the only one in the Colony except Taranaki at which annual cattle shows are not held. There can be no doubt of the advantage to farmers whether agricultural or Pastoral of comparing their produce and experience with that of others. And while on the one hand the best men will be encouraged by a public recognition of their merit the less successful will be stimulated to improve their farming in future. It is believed that our cereals and stock are quite equal if not superior to those of the other Provinces and as nothing is lost by ascertaining this it is proposed to hold the Exhibition on the day of the arrival of the Steamer from Auckland so that this question can be put to the test - Lastly it is proposed that no bona fide agriculturist or sheepfarmer shall be excluded from the society unless he be so excluded by ballot, 3/4ths of the votes of the members present being required to carry such exclusion - and that the Society should neither have a political character nor political discussion be allowed at its meetings Further details can be arranged if this proposal meets with support and you are requested to inform Mr.J.N. Wilson who kindly consents to act as Hony.Prov.Secy. if you or any of your friends will join such a society and attend a meeting to consider the subject on the - -
