Auckland, October 21, 1870. My dear McLean, I write you a line to say that all goes quietly here. Moananuis trouble has been settled in the way I told you by an advance of £300 to Whitaker which he has undertaken to recover and "peace" has been made with the Bailiffs for the present. Mr.Moananui is never long out of pecuniary troubles and I am afraid he will soon forget the recent lesson against giving pro notes. I saw Tarapipipi and the Piako natives myself relative to the sitting of the Land Court at Shortland and I sent Clarke up to Ohinemuri to see Te Hra on that subject the report which I gave to Mr.Vogel has no doubt come to your hands. It was agreed that the Court shd. be allowed to proceed and Clarke went there to watch proceedings. On the 18th both parties by their agents asked for adjournment until the 21, today. I have just had a message from Puckey saying "Native Lands Court sitting; we expect that Te Horas interests will be pesented". Clarke will I am sure take great care that there is no ground for complaint if that be possible. I hear, through Hetit, today that Topia and some of his people are at the Kuiti and that the Taranaki mob are on therr way there. The Kings people I think are jealous of any one connected with the Govt. and I beleive that neither Hetit nor any one who could or would give us information is allowed to know all that goes on at "Court". Ahipene and the Waiuku natives are giving mysterious warnings in their old way and appear to have or at least express suspicion of Hinikukutais proceedings and hints that he has joined the Kings side. We hear no more of Te Kooti just now. I suppose we shall have a visit from you shortly as I see H.E. has been making engagements for you and himself in December. Yours very truly, Daniel Pollen.
