Ohiwa 10th. September 1872 Dear Sir, I trust you will pardon the liberty I now take in addressing you; but having opened a school at the above place, on the 24th. Jily last, I am desirous of ascertaining whether the Government will grant me some assistance, as the resources of the natives are not very great, and their promises for payment cannot be relied on. In case the Government are not in a position to grant assistance, perhaps you will use your influence with the Defence Minister (to whom I have written by this post) in getting me appointed to one of the Native schools about to be opened on this Coast. Apologising for thus encroaching on your valuable time, and trusting you will do all in your power for me, I am, dear Sir, Yours truly (Signed) John Avent. To:- W. Kelly Esq. Wellington.
