Clyde Te Wairoa February 25th. 1869. ''I was at Ngatapa with Te Kooti. After the break up of the Garrison, I wandered with my brother, Hamora, in search of our companions - but unsuccessfully. I waited at Hikurangi; and came on thence to Ruha. I was with the rest of my people at Opotiki, where we were captured by Te Kooti's party. This was after the death of Karaitiana. ''Karaitiana and friends were slain by Te Waru, Te Kooti, and Paora Toki. ''Te Kooti was wounded in the foot, at the fight at RuakiIru. ''I was with the party in the invasion of Turanga, but not with those who slew Biggs. ''The reason the Garrison abandoned Ngatapa, was want of food and water, and shortness of ammunition. ''I don't know how many of Te Kooti's immediate followers escaped from the Pa. About 200 got away from the Pa; but not more than 100, I think, kept together with Te Kooti, those being principally ex-prisoners. Those killed, and taken by the Government forces being nearly all Turanga and Wairoa natives, and some Ureweras. "I saw Rewi te Ngahu at Ngatapa; not since. Te Raki Roa was at Ngatapa. He overtook myself and brother at Hikurangi; and went on in search of his own tribe, Ngati-Kowhatu. "Te Waru fled from Te Kautu. He was at Puketapu, when the Expedition went up there from Wairoa; and seeing the Coast clear afterwards, made for the Lake with his tribe. Ihaka, son of Wi Tipuna, informed of the Expedition, (self and brother), and of the movements of Te Waru. "Wi Tipuna and Rua Tokouri are still living at Waimaha. "Karanama was the smart man who brought the letter from Te Kooti, taken by Expedition; and Ihaka carried back to Te Kooti the news that the Government people were advancing in his rear; which influenced him in abandoning the position, whilst there was yet chance of escape open."
