Auckland 8 July 1871 Dear Mr. McLean, By this Mail you will have received the latest Native Intelligence. It was intended that Te Wheoro should have visited the Kuiti, upon an Invitation from Manuwhiri, but when he got as far as New Castle he changed his mind, preferring to have something more definite as to the object of the Interview. Aihepene has however gone, and he has promised that he would come in and see Paul Tuhaere on his return, which I think is now very doubtful as his wife has died in Childbirth since he left. The forthcoming Meeting at the Kuiti (if well attended) will I think disclose the real state of feeling, either for good or evil - but I am much surprized that they should have chosen this inclement season for the "Hui". Being uncertain as to your whereabouts I have sent Duplicates to Clarke at Tauranga, when opportunity offered, so as to telegraph. John White has returned and is now preparing his Report upon the Native Claims at Waiuku, so that we are very short handed and shall be glad as soon as young Vickers arrives. I will endeavor to obtain the particulars of Aihepene's visit and send you without any delay. I remain, Yours faithfully, H. T. Kemp
