In Mr. McLeans memo. to Govt. offering his services as Genl. Govt.Agent there were certain conditions named and accepted. One was, ''I should expect to have such cooperation and support as the circumstances require, with authority to initiate and carry out negotiations with the natives and to control the actions of all Officers Military or otherwise that might have the effect- of disturbing the peace of the District --- The Government broke faith in the following instances. 1. Lamberts case in not allowing Mr. Hamlin to carry out the wishes of Mr.McLean (the Government upheld his conduct.) 2. Bending Col.Whitmore to Poverty Bay against protest of Mr. McLean. 3. Attempting through Col.Lambert to induce a contingent of Ngatiporou to go to West Coast without Mr.McLean's knowledge. 4. Mr.Richmond on the part of Government in the Memo. of 12th Octr. 1868 states, And will treat with much attention all Mr.McLeans recommendations as to the location of movements of the Colonial Forces. Query. Why was not this done in Whitmores Case. 5. Why were men not raised and sent to Hawkes Bay upon the repeated applications of Mr.McLean.
