Tauranga June 18th 1870 My dear Mr McLean It has always been a puzzle to me how we are to manage to keep the Great Taupo Road in repair as there is no stone available or McAdaming - But the difficulty to my mind is solved - Last night I was looking over a copy of the ''Times Newspaper of the 28 Feby. last, and was very much interested in an invention of Mr. R.W. Thompson of Edinburgh - called the Road Steamer - I think it ought to be called the ''Steam Horse''. It is the very thing we want - and I would strongly recommend the Government to get one or two of them. It would be a matter of the greatest economy - and would soon reimburse the outlay - I send you the full account as all its wonderful capabilities are touched upon - I understand Mr. Gilies, our Auckland Superintendent has sent for one - Faithfully yours Hy.T. Clarke
