Auckland. September 20th. 1871. My dear McLean, There is no news since my last. The Kupapas, with Te Whero, have at last gone on, and Mair with them. I have heard nothing since they left Kopua. Te Whero was very sanguine that all would be right; but here is a letter from Tuhoro, not quite so bright. Enclosed is also a note from Maning about the letter of Ngapuhi and Rarawa to the King. I have not been able to find that any such letter has gone to the Post Office here. Perhaps, like Maori missives in general of that class, it hangs fire, and is only "coming." Pluckey is trying to get telegrams acacross by Ohinemuri, even whilst the Parliament sits, if no longer. He has been some days away; but I have not heard of him. The sea beach business will be all right. We shall have to pay high for the Pahamatown section of it, and perhaps a little more for the whole than was first stated. In all the purchases that are now being made or negotiated I take care to get all rights to foreshore surrendered. I have the summary of the Budget speech, and have opened my eyes wide to see the friends of the Provinces taking them by the throat, metaphorically, and requiring them to stand and deliver. I hope that you will be able to keep what you have got, but I doubt your being strong enough to keep them out of the Treasury. Auckland, you see, must have a million. If the others go in for shares, as they certainly will feel bound to do, your big loan will soon be dished. We look out for the next mail, presuming there will be a fight over finance. Auckland weather is once more restored to us, after four months storm and rain such as the oldest inhabitant has not experienced.
