Napier, 27th. Augt., 1865. My dear McLean, Will you let me know when the St. Kilda sails, that I may have the men ready there are altogether about 12. It has just come to my notice that Mr. Sutton is sending a man down to open a Canteen. I do not know by whose permission. There can be no necessity for a Canteen for 100 men when they are supplied with Grog as a Ration and may lead to evil, I would therefore urge upon you to prevent anything in the shape of a Canteen being opened. It I believe should not be done without my authority while the Detacht. is under the Command, you perhaps are not aware that such a thing as a Canteen is in contemplation if not this will bring it to your notice. If Spirits are kept from the Men I have little fear of them I fancy they were excited when they broke out last time - let me hear about the St. Kilda's sailing. Yours truly, C. Lambert. I have a long letter from Russell Major Atkinson came out strong what think you Mr. Fitzgeralds speech -
