Rissington 4 Novr. 1867 My dear McLean, Until Haultain returns with the uniforms etc. no men will be actually enrolled in the Constabulary so I shall be down again before that. I shall be at Taupo on Wedy. and shall try to get Paul and Heu Heu to offer a guide for the short cut thro' the Pahatutu bush. I think this shd. not be allowed to drop. I hope you will in managing the East Coast try to get decent land for the C.D.F. Everything always goes against me and I have quite given up hoping for anything, even a decent road to my house. But as the Govt. cheated me out of compensation for my sheep stolen at Titiokura I do trust and indeed think you will get as good land at Turanga. Of course the rubbish above the Bishops place is worse than 5/- land here and nobody wd. take it or cd. afford to clear it but anything between the Bishops and the river or stockade either of the places indeed talked of before would be a really good thing and as good or better than the Wairoa. The C.D.F. are the last people located in N. Z. They, or rather I took your verbal promise as being quite as good as a Genl.Govt. proclamation, and if you have the chance I think you will not put us in the shingle and scrub above Warengahika where I hear an influential gentleman of this Province gave out he meant to get you to put us. Don't forget Cobb!! Cox and I will see how far he can get his vehicle. Goodbye believe me Sincerely yours G. S. Whitmore
