Sep. 11, 1856. My dear Sir, I hope the documents forwarded by this opportunity will be sufficient to relieve Cooper of the responsibility of the sums of £10 & £35 which were paid away as stated by him -- it is unfair to charge an officer with misappropriation of public money, for it amounts to that, after the lapse of 4 years and under other circumstances I would have seen the A. J. at our antipodes before hunting up dusty documents all knowledge of which had long since been buried in oblivion. All is quiet here and there is no appearance of any more fighting indeed as I said before the natives appear sick of it. There is a feeling amongst the anti-land sellers that as peace has been made with Russia, a large body of soldiers will be sent to this country to subdue them and at Waitara powder is being fast made to provide against the expected attack! I am told there was nothing in those letters brought up by Parris from Uruwera last week for Katatore, answers to which were sent this day. In the event of Katatore being pressed, Ngatiruanui might return to save him, for they do not hesitate to say that with the death of Katatore the whole of this district will pass into the hands of the pakeha as there is no native to take his place. The sooner so desirable a circumstance happens the better for tatou katou. H. Halse.
