Saturday 29 Nov. 56. My dear Sir, The enclosed copy of a letter to Ihaia somewhat alters the looked for peace prospects and adds another to the many variations which it has been our lot to witness regarding the native quarrel. I myself do not attach much importance to the letter still I think you ought to have a copy of it. The natives may or they may not come, should they however, I do not think Katatore and W. Kingi would be backward in applying and obtaining aid from the Ngatiruanui and Ngatimaru tribes (notwithstanding the statement that the of both had been renewed) under such circumstances this unfortunate Province would again be disturbed and possibly endangered. I shall endeavour to see W. Kingi and other important men at an early opportunity to see what can be picked up upon the subject. The other enclosure was received yesterday which in my uncertain state rather surprised me. The appt. will materially add to my duties and present responsibility which I can have no objection to provided that I am not expected to remain on a salary of £ 150 per annum. I cannot preserve a decent exterior, irrespective of supporting a wife and family, and therefore trust you will endeavour to obtain for me some addition to that salary. Should you however be unable to do so I shall esteem it a favour if you will tell me so at the earliest opportunity. Raumeka returned to the Ninia yesterday, a circumstance that induces me to think that Katatore does not exactly see his way clearly in the peace question. I have found out one of the Natives who had a for which Cooper held himself responsible for which the account with others was forwarded to you in April last, and shall be able to receive I hope the whole amount £2.15. Yours faithfully, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
