New Plymouth April 29th. 1858. To D. McLean Esqr., Dr. Sir, I have been writing to you officially some weeks past to the North, expecting you had returned there, but by the last mail from the South I heard you were at Wellington. You will have heard from Mr. Halse no doubt of the Governors proposal, or offer, to remove Ihaia and his people to the Chatham Island, wh. offer they decline to accept, having been reinforced by their friends from Wanganui. On the 16th. instant the Ngatimaniapotos arrived about 60, Kahawa and Tikaokao, they have also offered to take them away to Waikato, and recommended peace. The former, Ihaia and his people object to, the latter Wm. King and his party object to. Yesterday a small party arrived from Waipa - 12 in number, among them a Chief by name Rawanganga, they came to Wm. King, I saw them just as they arrived, but as it was late in the evening I had no conversation with them to enable me to state the object of their visit - they appear a very respectable party and I should say judging from their demeanour, had come with good intentions. I was told Rawanganga was Brother to Potatau - but it may be a ''Teina Ke''. I fear Sir unless we can effect some arrangement to put a stop to this state of things, we shall have a great gathering of people both from the North and the South. I am doing my best, with Wm. Kings party to get them to give over further hostilities some are beginning to think favourably. I am endeavouring to get Ihaia to vacate their Karaka, as a ''peace offering'', which if he will only consent to it will be ended, he has partially promised me. Please Sir to excuse this very hurried and brief epistle. I remain Dr. Sir, Your most obedt. St. Robert Parris.
