Napier 4th. January 1869. Dear Sir, I enclose an extract from Lt. Coll. Lamberts letter of the 26th. ult. in which he states that you used expressions of surprise in reference to my having asked you privately through Major Green for any information relative to the different engagements in which the Wairoa Contingent was engaged. I did not call on you officially through Lt. Coll. Lambert to furnish a report of the proceedings in question as you were only employed on a particular duty which I believe ceased on your return to Wairoa. I was therefore astonished on the receipt of Lt. Coll. Lamberts letter to find that you had not only shown him a private letter but also commented upon the same without first letting me know that you felt the least hesitation in complying with my request, probably you will be able to give some explanation, as I was unprepared for such a proceeding on your part.
