My dear Sir, Before leaving this place, I write you a few last lines - to say that I am quite satisfied that the country from Tauranga to this place and on to Whanganui is in every respect in a most satisfactory state. Nothing could exceed the joy the natives have everywhere shown at the Governor again visiting their country - they regarded his having done so as an earnest that Europeans will follow in considerable numbers and they press eagerly that I will do my best to bring this result about - They have already built in some places, and in others are about to build guest houses for the reception of strangers where they may receive good plain food. Many of them express a great desire to let their lands as sheep runs - and have asked me to find for them persons who will take them at a fair rent. In the one case in which I asked the rent they expected I thought it very low. I have just come down from Tongariro and am now going on to Whanganui with twenty of the Tuhorerangi - We had a wretched day on Tongariro, I saw litterally nothing but mist and smoke and was almost blown away, and perished with cold, but I thought it better to break through their old prejudices. They now wish travellers to come and ascend the mountain - taking their guides and paying them ten shillings each for the days work - The one wish expressed everywhere is, get Europeans to come in amongst us - I have never in the course of my experience seen the country in as good a state as it now is - This will be a great thing for Napier as the Taupo people tell me that place is the natural outlet of their country. Try and move your Province to be sure of their true interests - and begin the road into Taupo at once. You will be a great benefactor to New Zealand, if you do this. Truly yours, G. Grey. P.S.
