Wairoa March 19, 69 Dear Sir, I enclose you a letter from 'Hamana' on the subject I have already written to you about. I got ''Paora te Apatu'' and ''Tamihana'' to muster 20 men for keeping watch around the Hills near the ''Waiau'' and hope they may possibly capture some of the strolling spies of the enemy. The native ''Tohuugas'' have prophesied serious fighting to take place at ''Wairoa'' -- everything favors the idea. I do not think that anything more can be done for our safety so far -- I have organised some combination amongst the Chiefs in case of attack, and we must take our chance -- You do not say that you have had any further, communication from ''Wellington'' respecting myself. I have nothing beyond what I have already said, to urge upon the subject -- I should be I dare say of very nearly as much service to you if out of Govt. employ but I would like to know as soon as may be what the upshot is to be -- The depression amongst the settlers here is very great, these last murders have produced more alarm than anything that has yet occurred. In truth it is to my view the very worst feature that has been developed in the present outbreak. I beg to remain, Dear Sir, Your obed. servt. Geo. B. Worgan His Honor D. McLean, Napier Poor ''Goulet'' is almost starving -- he should have been made one of the ''scouts'' for which he is well adapted. G. B. W.
