Police Barracks Jan. 5th. 1852. Dear Sir, Your letter dated Hawkes Bay 28th November is conclusive and I hope the change will be to your advantage - one thing is certain you are relieved of an intolerable burthen in getting clear of a most troublesome set of natives going from bad to worse and towards whom, I fear, a severe policy must eventually be enforced. Since the offer of £30 in the case of horse killing it has ceased to assume a powder aspect - another offer, originating I believe with Honi Ropiha of £50 to be paid in two years has set the trouble at rest - depend upon it, these fellows like fighting as much as we do and in reality (clear of the bush) no match for Europeans. I always maintain a 2nd. Murat with similar followers would clear the country i.e. would frighten them out of mind and make them just what we require, obedient to our laws and customs. I am looking for Hakopa with news of peace and though he may not be here in time you may make your mind easy on that subject. Old Rawiri was very pouri about it and with reason the mare being in foal and part payment for Mangati. Will you have the goodness to return the Abstracts for half years rent and let me know whether the next are to be forwarded for your signature. Bless me 12 oclock I had no idea it was so late. Hoping you are well, believe me, Sincerely yours, H. Halse.
