Hokianga. September 5th. 1871. My dear McLean, I write to inform you that three letters have been posted to-day; one from the Ngapuhi at the Bay of Islands, one from Moses Tawhai, and some representative Chiefs of his party in Hokianga; and another from the Rarawa Chiefs Te Tai, Wiremu Papahia, Tia Pakeke (uncle of Te Wake), and other principal men of Te Rarawa; and directed to Tawhiao and the Chiefs of Waikato. All the letters demand that the murderer of Todd be given up to the law. I have no news of any other kind for you, except that Wi Katene has written a very letter to his constitutents. "A little learning", you know the rest, and also what my opinion has always been, of Maoris being let into Parliament; but as you have them, you must make the best of them. I am in a great hurry, and indeed have nothing more to say, except that I am, as always, Yours very truly, P.S. (Signed) F.E. Maning. I have let Dr. Pollen know that the letters have been sent. (Signed) F.E.M.
