New Plymouth July 23rd. 1851. Dear Sir, The "Wellington" arrived here this afternoon from Nelson and Napaero Bay, with goods and limestone, but no news; and will sail for Wellington probably to-morrow evening. I have therefore sat down to thank you for your letter of 30th. of June, as well as the desire therein contained, to promote my welfare. I am the more gratified at that circumstance, as shewing I have acted in a manner to your entire satisfaction, and if I am thus far in the track of well-doing, a word from you may be most beneficial. Wiremu Kingi evinces no intention to alter his resolve, relative to the Land Question; but though an acknowledged Chief, he is an opinionist. Hence the hope of those in favour looking forward to the chance of thinning his numbers previously to gaining him likewise, - a certain result, but unfortunately, a question of time. Ihaia and Tamati called here this morning, preparatory to buying a plough from Mr. White. They promised to write, when occasion required. Although £1 is asked for Scrip, I think 15/- would command the market. In your next, say what quantity is wanted, and the maximum price allowed. If you will return the letter-covers, I will present them for payment as before. Fully expecting you here, I did not forward Abstracts for signatures, by Heale; but will now do so by next overland mail. Is it necessary to get an authority for the rental of Barracks, this currect year? Any information from the South - if you are there - will be acceptable in this dull place. I remain Yours very sincerely (Signed) H. Halse. To:- D. McLean Esq.
