. Westoe, Marton, 13. 12. 71 My Dear McLean, I saw Knocks at Otaki. He told me that Wi Hapi Ngawaka, and the bulk of the Kakariki and Reu Reu Ngatiraukawas have decided to leave the district and settle in Waikato. I heard also at Manawatu that Ihakara and his people had come to the same conclusion and that they intended to sell their lands south of Manawatu before they go. I cannot vouch for the truth of the reports. Since I came here I have heard (second hand from a Ngatiraukawa,) that they have ploughed up and planted two large paddocks nearly opposite my house, which does not look like going. Perhaps some mean to go, and some don't. Ngawaka's daughter got into the coach at the Hostelry in Welln. and when asked by the Coachman at Manawatu for her ticket, it appeared she had no Govt. order or authority. I therefore felt bound to promise that her fare should be paid and her supper and bed at Langleys which together will be £2. 5. I beleive. It would be a good plan if the Coachman was told not to take them up on Govt. credit, unless they shew their orders starting. I saw Stewart at Manawatu and apparently every thing is going on as well as can be expected after such a wet winter. Beleive me, Yours very sincerely, William Fox
