Letter from Wm. B. Baker to Donald McLean Esq. dated 8th. March 1858. Auckland 8th, March 1858 My dear Sir, We have been unusually busy since my last to you, paying for land, moving the offices; and what with the Maori laws, there has been no slack of work. Mr. White haying accompanied Mr. Bell, his brother has taken his place. Mr. Fountain has Mr. Dickson's; and young Fred Kempthorne is engaged as an extra. There is one drawback, and very seriously felt too, - neither of them can speak, read or copy Maori. Paikea's party are trying a new method of ejecting Tirarau from the lands they claim. They have or intend to - entered an action against him in the Supreme Court, but I am afraid the old gentleman will show his utter disregard for English Courts of Justice. There is a strong feeling against him among the Ngapuhi; and I am told that at the great meeting at Kororaeka for erecting the flag-staff, that his representative, Hori Taihau, the only man of his party present - was informed that they were determined to keep him on his own bounds, where they would not interfere with him; but if he trespassed on their claims, they would repel him by force of arms. So soon as Mr. Rogan again visits that neighbourhood, a large and influential party of Ngapuhi intend to meet him for the purpose of bringing the question to a final issue. Our present office accommodations are exceedingly inconvenient; and will, I fear, be almost untenable during the Winter months. I must close this abruptly, as several papers require immediate attention; and remain, my dear Sir, most respectfully yours (Signed) Wm. B. Baker. To:-Donald McLean Esq.
