Wairoa 6th. Novr. 1868. Dear McLean, I have returned all right taken a woman Prisoner and an old man who was present at the murders of the Scouts he has been shot. We found Wataroa deserted, Te Waru said to be gone to Turanga. I have advanced £3 to Tareha, Renata, and Henery, on account of Pay will you recover it for the Govt. out of their Pay be sure and do so or I may lose it, all quiet here. I hear all the canoes are collected up the River at the Reinga where there are cultivations I purpose taking the Ngatiporos and 40 or 60 Europeans and reconoitre the Place and bring the Canoes away I am told they do not live there but go backward and forward to Poverty Bay. It is possible they may have some staying there, by our going there we shall tranquilize the minds of people the Military settlers are affraid to go back. I like the Ngatiporos they will fight I carebetter for some we have a great number of people on pay. What is to be done with them. Karaitiana's heart had been taken out. It is reported that the women and children are over the lake and that Te Waru joined Te Kootee. This alarm has been a grave mistake I regret it there is great blame somewhere but all we can do is to make things easy we must be ready for anything that may arise and I suppose Te Kootee will move altho' some some think if he is let alone he will not attack when shall you be up to see us again I expected to find Mr. Richmond here on my return. Yours very truly, C. Lambert.
