Letter from John Rogan to Donald McLean, dated 15th, May 1854. Mokau 15th May 1854. Dear Sir, Your letter of 1st. May, I received; which induced me to report on Reapuna (?) Road, incomplete as it is. I explained to Reapuna particularly that nothing would be done to the Road till the whole line was examined by me. He said the natives would not work at it till next Spring, when he hopes to conduct me over the mountains; so that the fault, if any, entirely rests upon those who pretend to be interested in the Mill. If the Government is interested in this Road, inspection of the natives, I beg to offer a suggestion that some person be appointed (when the work commences) to superintend the men; because, if left to them-selves, they will work when it pleases them, and the money will go but a short way towards making the road. If you think my time would be well employed there, I should go next Summer; and in a month or six weeks, with a good party, a passable road might be made. Is the Road over the Parenui to be explored? Rain incessantly for this last fortnight. I have taken such a cold from wet that I have been laid up at the Mission Station this last week. The survey men I have suspended for a time, but will be ready to commence again when the weather permits. The people in town are very anxious for my return, as the surveys are getting in arrear; but I cannot leave satisfactorily to myself till I survey at least part of the land reported to you in my last letter. No news, I remain, Yours faithfully, (Signed) John Rogan, To:- Donald McLean,
